Customer Service

Whatever Happened to Good Customer Service?

Not even excellent customer service, just regular, run-of-the-mill, basic home and job training?

Where did it go?

I am only in my mid-thirties, and I remember good customer service when I was a child, but by my mid-teens, it seemed to have disappeared.

I have worked in all types of jobs that required good customer service skills, so I am admittedly particularly hard on people in the service industry who do not deliver.

Even when I was having a really crappy day, it was understood that you treat all customers/clients in a respectful and polite demeanor. I used to work with a few people who were like, "I don't get paid enough to portray a customer service attitude and do my other duties at the same time."

Well, it used to be standard that you delivered a good customer attitude regardless of what your pay was.

But I guess that was back in the day.

What do YOU do when you receive bad customer support nowadays? It used to be sufficient to speak to the manager or supervisor in charge and complain. I don't think that is as effective as it used to be.

Many people, including me, choose to hit companies and corporations where it hurts - their pocketbook. I stop shopping there. I find out whether the company is owned by a larger company that owns other stores; I stop shopping at those other stores, too.

Put your money (or your lack of money) where your mouth is. Remember, often actions speak louder than words.

One of the places I am surprised at poor customer service is McDonald's. I worked at McDonald's when I was younger and we would take orders as fast as we could and somehow we managed to get the food out like clockwork.

If we were really busy we would at least acknowledged that we were aware of the customer being there.

Now days I find it really annoying to find it common to wait 5 minutes just to get someone to wait on me.

It is really insulting to me when they ask if it is for here or to go and even though I say it is for here they put it in a bag.

I have actually had a McDonald's employee when I asked to have it on a tray actually put the bag on a tray.
